FBN--NFL-IRELAND-ROONEYS

Ireland is home turf for Rooney family as Steelers lead NFL into Dublin game

SUMMARY: The game Sunday between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings is a homecoming of sorts for the Rooney family, which traces its roots to Newry in Northern Ireland. Team officials were in Newry on Thursday for an event with the Ireland Funds, a philanthropic organization that his father cofounded more than 30 years before becoming U.S. ambassador to Ireland in 2009. They announced the creation of a scholarship fund in the name of Daniel and Patricia Rooney. As ambassador, Daniel M. Rooney made it a point to visit all 32 counties in Ireland, that’s 26 in the Republic and six in the North. Dublin’s Croke Park is the setting for Ireland’s first regular-season NFL game.

FBN--JETS-GLENN’S SIDELINE DANCE

Aaron Glenn’s viral dance moves sparked mixed reactions, but Jets coach says he’ll always be himself

SUMMARY: Aaron Glenn’s dance moves on the sideline have made him a viral sensation on social media. The New York Jets coach celebrated a blocked field goal and touchdown with an impromptu dance during Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. Despite the Jets losing 29-27, Glenn’s dance gained attention when ESPN’s Jenna Laine synchronized it to Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September.” Her tweet has since garnered 2.6 million views. Glenn says he hasn’t seen that video but insists he’s just being himself. He adds that he will continue be authentic, regardless of others’ opinions of how a head coach should act.

SOC--UEFA-ISRAEL

European soccer body UEFA moves toward vote to suspend Israel

SUMMARY: European soccer body UEFA is moving toward a vote to suspend its member federation Israel over the war in Gaza, people familiar with the proposal told The Associated Press on Thursday. A majority of UEFA’s 20-member executive committee is expected to support any vote in favor of suspending Israeli teams from international play, two sources told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. The move comes two weeks before the Israel men’s team is due to resume its 2026 World Cup qualifying group with games in Norway and Italy.

GLF--RYDER CUP-MISSING MICKELSON

Phil Mickelson is an unwanted outsider in what could have been his Ryder Cup at Bethpage

SUMMARY: This could have been Phil Mickelson’s Ryder Cup. When Bethpage Black was awarded the 2025 version of USA vs. Europe, all signs pointed toward Mickelson, who built his reputation as a fan favorite on the brawny municipal course outside New York City. Now 55 and with six major titles to his name, Mickelson would’ve been a natural to be leading the U.S. this week. His move to LIV Golf, however, turned him into an outsider in the world of “traditional golf.” In one of the ironies of this year’s event, it’s one of Mickelson’s favorite Ryder Cup partners serving as captain. Mickelson and Keegan Bradley went 4-1 as a team in 2012 and 2014.

Riders were targeted at the recent Spanish Vuelta, causing disruption to the Grand Tour event. It was estimated more than 100,000 people were on the streets in Madrid during the final stage this month with protestors criticizing the presence of the Israel Premier Tech team. GLF--RYDER CUP-TRUMP

Donald Trump heads to the Ryder Cup, embraced by a golf world that once shunned him

SUMMARY: Four years ago, President Donald Trump was persona non grata in the golf world, ostracized from the sport he loves in the wake of the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The PGA of America pulled his chance to host its major championship and officials in his hometown, New York City, tried ousting his company from the golf course it had hired him to run. On Friday, Trump will be front and center at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island — welcomed to the first day of competition by the very powers that once shunned him. The Ryder Cup is run by the PGA of America, the organization that yanked its 2022 PGA Championship from his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course.

BBO--MARINERS CLINCH

Mariners win AL West for 1st time in 24 years as Raleigh reaches 60 homers in 9-2 win over Rockies

SUMMARY: It was only fitting when it was Cal Raleigh who catapulted the Seattle Mariners to their first AL West championship in 24 years Wednesday night. The switch-hitting catcher launched two more homers to give him a major league-best 60 this season, and the streaking Mariners clinched the fourth division crown in the franchise’s 49-year history with a 9-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The only big league team that’s never been to a World Series, Seattle last won the AL West in 2001 when it set an American League record with 116 wins — thanks in large part to a prolific rookie season from Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki.

BBO--MARINERS-RALEIGH

Cal Raleigh hits his 60th home run of the season, becoming the 7th MLB player to achieve the feat

SUMMARY: Cal Raleigh has become the seventh player in major league history to hit 60 home runs in a season, launching two solo shots for the Seattle Mariners against the Colorado Rockies. Batting left-handed in the first inning Wednesday night, the switch-hitting catcher connected off Tanner Gordon and sent a drive to right field that reached the top deck at T-Mobile Park for his 59th longball of the year. Then in the eighth, batting left-handed again, Raleigh hit No. 60 off Angel Chivilli — most in the majors this year. With a 9-2 victory, Seattle clinched its fourth AL West title and first since 2001. The only other players to reach 60 home runs in a season are Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds and Aaron Judge.
