BBO--THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL

DESCRIPTION: A 4-3 defeat at San Francisco dropped the Atlanta Braves to 10 games under .500 and 9 1/2 behind the National League’s final playoff spot. The Braves haven’t missed the postseason since 2017. It’s too early to count them out this year, but they can’t afford to have much more go wrong. Atlanta started the season 0-7, then spent about six weeks clawing its way back to .500. All that work has already been undone after the Braves dropped another seven straight this past week. The last five of those defeats have been by one run. By Baseball Writer Noah Trister. UPCOMING: 600 words, photos.

FBN--ENERGIZED 49ERS

DESCRIPTION: SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The vibes were off from the the start last season for the San Francisco 49ers. Contract disputes provided a cloud over the team throughout the spring and summer, the Super Bowl hangover and a third straight short offseason sapped some energy and a lack of roster turnover led to some staleness around the Niners. Those factors and a bevy of injuries turned a Super Bowl contender into a 6-11 also-ran, leading coach Kyle Shanahan to deliver a blunt message at the end of the season about what needed to change in 2025. BKN--NBA FINALS-OKC SUPPORTING CAST

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gets help in Game 2 as Thunder roll past Pacers to even NBA Finals

SUMMARY: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got some much-needed assistance from his teammates in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, and the Oklahoma City Thunder evened the series against the Indiana Pacers with a 123-107 victory. After scoring 38 points in Game 1, Gilgeous-Alexander had 34 points and eight assists in Game 2 — typical performances from the league’s MVP and scoring champion. Co-stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren played more like their usual selves on Sunday. Veteran reserve Alex Caruso had another strong performance and Aaron Wiggins provided a surprise boost in Oklahoma City’s first Finals win since 2012.

BKN--NBA FINALS-PACERS

Pacers fail to sweep Games 1 and 2 in a series for the first time in these playoffs

SUMMARY: For the Indiana Pacers, a chance at being perfect in Games 1 and 2 of these playoffs went awry. They’ll have to settle for a mere split of the opening two games in the NBA Finals instead. The Pacers’ bid to become the fifth team in NBA history to go 8-0 to open the four playoff rounds — sweeping Games 1 and 2 in all four series — was stopped on Sunday night by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder took control early and won Game 2 of the NBA Finals 123-107, tying the championship matchup at a game apiece.

Game 2: Thunder open another big lead and keep control, topping Pacers 123-107 to even NBA Finals

SUMMARY: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 34 points, Alex Caruso added 20 off the bench and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers 123-107 on Sunday night to tie the NBA Finals at one game apiece. Red Sox hit 5 home runs and overcome 2 by Judge in 11-7 win over Yankees

SUMMARY: Carlos Narváez put Boston ahead with a three-run homer against his former team, and the Red Sox overcame two home runs by Aaron Judge in an 11-7 victory over the New York Yankees. Rafael Devers also went deep as Boston equaled a season high with five longballs to take two of three games at Yankee Stadium in the first series this season between the longtime rivals. Narváez signed with the Yankees in 2015 and broke into the big leagues with them last year, getting into six games before New York traded him to Boston in December. The rookie catcher gave the Red Sox a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning by lifting a fastball from Carlos Rodón into the left-field seats.

GLF--US OPEN

US Open gets a soggy start to the week at Oakmont, with Jordan Spieth among early arrivals

SUMMARY: U.S. Open week is off to a soggy start at Oakmont. Players are starting to arrive equipped with umbrellas and expectations of a typical tough test. Jordan Spieth was among the early arrivals. He played the front nine Saturday and got in 11 holes Sunday. The rough is every bit as deep and thick as advertised. Spieth says it’s one of the few U.S. Open courses that doesn’t need a lot of work to be ready for a major. He says mistakes are bound to happen. The key to Oakmont is not to compound the mistakes.

Ryan Fox wins Canadian Open with ‘best shot I’ve ever hit’ in playoff to beat Sam Burns

SUMMARY: Ryan Fox is a PGA Tour winner for the second time in five weeks. He hit what he calls the best shot he’s ever hit to beat Sam Burns on the fourth playoff hole in the Canadian Open. Fox hit 3-wood to 7 feet and only needed two putts for the victory. He shot a 66 by making a birdie putt just inside 18 feet on the 18th hole in regulation. Burns shot 62. He missed a 5-foot birdie putt for the win on the first extra hole. He three-putted from about 55 feet so make it easy on Fox in the end.

Alcaraz produces another major comeback to win French Open final in five-set thriller against Sinner

SUMMARY: Bad starts in Grand Slam finals are nothing new for Carlos Alcaraz and each time it’s happened he has won the tournament anyway. But not in such dramatic style as Sunday’s French Open final. The Spaniard rallied from two sets down and saved three match points to beat Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2) for his fifth major title in as many finals. It was his second straight French Open title with a comeback, after trailing 2-1 in sets to Alexander Zverev in last year’s final and a third major title from behind following his five-set win against Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final. It was also the longest final in French Open history at 5 hours, 29 minutes.

Panthers-Oilers Stanley Cup Final is as tight as can be. Game 3 could tilt the series

SUMMARY: The second consecutive Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers has been about as even as a series can get through two games, with each winning one in overtime. The Panthers have led for more time, the Oilers have gotten more shots on net and a bounce or two here or there could have changed the complexion of where these teams are at. That’s still the case going into Game 3 on Monday night with the chance that small adjustments could tilt the series one way or the other.

TEN--FRENCH OPEN-GAUFF

Coco Gauff used words and a mirror to persuade herself she could win the French Open

SUMMARY: A little bit of self-persuasion went a very long way for Coco Gauff, whose victory at the French Open gave the 21-year-old American a trophy she has long coveted, and a second major title. Gauff defeated top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 to add to her U.S. Open title two years ago. Sabalenka had been the more in-form player heading into the final. Gauff felt she needed extra motivation and drew inspiration from Gabby Thomas, the women’s Olympic 200-meter champion. Thomas had kept writing down that she would be the Olympic champion so Gauff grabbed a piece of paper and wrote “I will be French Open champion 2025.”
