QUANTICO - Ann Bravard Whaley Phillips died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Thomas Bravard Whaley and Bessie Rebecca Booth Whaley. She graduated from Washington High School in Princess Anne, Stuart Hall in Staunton, Va., and Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, D.C. She married H. Lay Phillips, Jr. in 1951 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Princess Anne. They raised their family in their beloved home, "Catchpenny Farm" in Quantico, where they lived for 62 years until he died on Aug. 12, 2013, and where she continued to live until her death on Aug. 12, 2016. Ann loved life and people, and lived her entire life in service to others in the community. She was a consummate caregiver to family and friends. She loved her church, St. Peter's, and her most cherished ministries there were the Altar Guild, which she had served on from the age of 16, and the Comforters Prayer Group. She also loved her service on the boards of the Children's Home Foundation and the John B. Parsons Foundation. She so enjoyed her 9-hole golf group at Green Hill, her bridge group, and participating in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She had a love of music and dancing, which she shared with her late husband, as expressed through her involvement in the PRMC Junior Board dance and its Grand March. She dearly loved animals, and in her lifetime, she cherished many special pets. She is survived by three children, Bravard Cornbrooks (Ernie), Hank Phillips (Elizabeth), and Thomas W. Phillips (Mary); ten grandchildren, Emerson Kirk, Rosanne Catalano (Anthony), Skip Cornbrooks (Sarah), Martha Cornbrooks (Sean), Charlotte Cornbrooks, Kate Marshburn (Derek), Andrew Phillips (Chiara), Jennifer Mainwaring (Jeff), Elizabeth Phillips, and Lydia Phillips; eight great-grandchildren, and one on the way; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and "Winston" her loyal companion dog of three years. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, with Rev. David Michaud officiating. A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home. Interment at Parsons Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in her memory to St. Peter's Memorial Fund, 115 St. Peter's Street, Salisbury, MD 21801, or the Children's Home Foundation (provides scholarships for youth and adults in financial need for vocational education), c/o Candy Minner, 423 South Second Street, Denton, MD 21629. Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home PA, 501 Snow Hill Rd., Salisbury, MD 21804. Please visit www.hollowayfh.com to send condolences to the family.
