PRINCESS ANNE — On Feb. 9, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) and the Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD) Prevention Center helped spread alcohol awareness by hosting their first Alcohol Awareness Fair inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center on the university’s campus.
“It was important to do this event with upcoming activities coming up like Homecoming,” said Talareah Campbell, Academic Advisor/Co-Student Services Coordinator. “Everyone needs to be aware of the affects alcohol can have on you. It was cool seeing the student-athletes learn how certain beverages can impact you. We used the beer goggles activity as an example and the athletes could see firsthand how they would be affected.”
During the fair, five unique stations were set up for the student-athletes to walk around so they may participate in the different activities. The information station had various pamphlets and a display board on how alcohol can affect the body. There were two stations: mixologist and price. The mixologist station showed how the amounts of alcohol put into one drink can really affect the mind and body while the prize station had a spinning wheel and fun giveaways when you participated in the questions that the ATOD staff provided.
“I like to thank all the student-athletes who participated this year and cannot wait for next year’s fair,” Campbell added.
