The Dorchester Center for the Arts is pleased to welcome the return of the Brown Quilters Create and Educate group for a Women’s History Month exhibition in the George B. Todd Performance Hall.
“Harriet Tubman: More Than a Slave” is the title of this exhibit and theme reflected in the assortment of fiber art items on display. Quilts, wall hangings, even a hand-crafted recreation of Harriet Tubman’s outfit and bag will be on display through March 26.
Group members Deborah Johnson and Candice Salter have organized the exhibit, which features a Second Saturday Artists’ Reception on March 12 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with special guests, light refreshments and live music. Second Saturday will also feature a free Community Day open sewing and quilting postcard workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., open to ages 16 and up. Call 410-228-7782 to make reservations.
The Main Gallery for March features “The Art of Model Boat Building” with the work of seven Eastern Shore artists on display.
March also features the start of the new beginners’ salsa/Bachata classes in the Performance Hall, taught by Dancing on the Shore instructor Aggie Beletsky. This four-week session meets Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. on March 10, 17, 24 and 31. A second session of beginning Bachata/Merengue will be held April 21, May 5, May 12 and May 26. The cost for each four-week session is $50 per person for both DCA members and non-members. Singles are welcome.
Please note the Dancing on the Shore mask policy: fully vaccinated people can attend dance lessons without wearing a mask only if they provide proof of vaccination. Attendees will need to either bring in a photocopy of their vaccination card (or proof of vaccination) or bring their card and a copy will be made. Only after proof of vaccination has been provided can a student attend class without a mask. Students will need to continue to wear a mask until proof of full vaccination is provided. All unvaccinated students must continue to wear masks during class.
