Winter in the studios at DCA

CAMBRIDGE - The winter session at Dorchester Center for the Arts is filled with several new instructional arts offerings. For complete information, find the winter program catalog online at www.dorchesterarts.org.

Intermediate Ceramics with Robert Gladney begins on Jan. 25 and runs weekly on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. through March 1. Basic hand-building experience is necessary.

Students will develop their pottery skills working independently within a classroom setting. The class includes slab, coil construction and extruding techniques. The class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay and use of special tools needed.

Clay tools are available or bring your own. Bisque firing is included. Open Studio access is included with all adult wheel and hand-building classes. Open studio is held weekly on Thursday evenings 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Beginning Watercolors with Diana Evans starts on Jan. 27 and runs weekly on Thursdays from 1:30-4 p.m. through Feb. 17. A second session will begin on Feb. 24. Students will learn which brush to use, the proper water-to-paint ratio, how to set up a palette, how to mix colors and whether to use wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry techniques

Students will experiment with several techniques and produce a finished painting. No experience needed. The materials list will be available upon registering for the class.

Master carver Warren Saunders returns on Feb. 4 for Decoy Carving for All, a 10-week class weekly on Fridays 1-4 p.m. through April 8. Students will carve a decoy using a knife or more advanced students will power carve in the Ward style. All decoys are completed with paint.

On Feb. 10, mosaic artist Joanne Gelles will lead a one-day workshop from 5-8 p.m. to create a mosaic trivet, wall hanging or tray. She will show participants how easy it is to create original mosaic art.

Students will learn the basics of cutting tile; adhesives, designing a project and grouting. Open to ages 16 and up. All materials included.
