EASTON -- Willie Lee "Sweets" Smith Sr., 84 of Easton, passed away on Monday, Feb. 26, 2007 at Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge, after a lengthy illness.
Born Sept. 4, 1922 in Creedmoor, N.C., he was the son of the late Willie Mac McKinley and Mary Elizabeth Smith. He received his education in Dinwiddie County, Va. before his parents relocated to the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
During his career he was employed by Anderson Lumber Co., Talbot County Public Schools and MD Lime Company. He was employed by Chesapeake Building until his health failed.
His favorite hobbies were fishing, watching car racing, baseball and picking greens.
Mr. Smith is survived by his children, Lorraine Caldwell (Richard, Sr.) of Easton, Hazel Kilpatrick (Juan) of Alexandria, Va., Barbara Smith (Russell) of Easton, Carolyn Hayman (Lenwood Sr.) of Easton, Willie L. Smith Jr. (Daphine) of Trappe, Matthew Smith of Easton, Gloria Jean Matthews (Carroll) of Upper Marlboro, Sherwood Jackson (Denise) of Vienna, Dorthea Greene of Preston, Keiford Copper Sr. (Alfreda) of Trappe, Christopher Greene of Alexandria, Va., Tanisha and Anthony Greene of Baltimore; an aunt, Estella Smith of Petersburg, Va.; a mother-in-law, Hazel J. Williams of Easton; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a close friend, Thurman Bryan of Trappe and a number of other relatives.
His wife, Rosetta J. Smith; a son, Ray A. Smith Sr. and a great-granddaughter, Tyshika L. Askins preceded him in death.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, at Henry Funeral Home, PA in Cambridge. The Rev. Thaddeus D. Hackett will officiate. Inurnment will be a later date.
There will be a viewing Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
