SALISBURY — Wicomico County Director of Administration Wayne Strausburg announced at a press conference Thursday that the Wicomico County Health Department received notification that a resident tested positive for COVID-19.

“We have our first confirmed case of COVID-19,” Mr. Strausburg said. “We have also learned that there are confirmed COVID-19 cases in Delaware and Accomack County, Va. So this virus has now arrived on Delmarva, and we anticipate the spread of the virus, is going to grow now that it’s here.”

Health Officer Laurie Brewster said, “We were notified this morning that we have an individual, a man in his 30s, who has traveled outside of the country, who has tested positive.” The man was not tested in Wicomico, is quarantined and doing well, she said.

In a separate press conference in Annapolis earlier in the day, Gov. Larry Hogan introduced additional moves to fight the spread of the virus. At the time of his announcements, 10 a.m., there were 107 confirmed cases in the state, including a 5-year-old girl in Howard County.

He ordered shopping malls and entertainment venues to close, beginning at 5 p.m. today, and prohibited gatherings of more than 10 people. Access to BWI Airport will be restricted to ticketed passengers and employees, with exceptions made for those helping travelers with disabilities.

“Some people are treating this like a vacation or a spring break, with parties and cookouts and large gatherings in some of our parks,” Gov. Hogan said. “Let me be very clear: If you are engaged in this type of activity, you are in violation of state law and you are endangering the lives of your fellow Marylanders.”

In Dorchester County, restaurants are operating on a carry-out basis, as businesses try to stay open. Public events and church services continue to be canceled and postponed.

Free breakfast, lunch and dinner bags are being distributed to school children at the Empowerment Center on Pine Street in Cambridge, New Beginnings at the Bay Country Apartments in Cambridge, Goodwill Industries parking lot on U.S. 50, Sandy Hill Choptank, Vienna and Hurlock elementary schools, or North Dorchester High School from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. until classes resume.
