CAMBRIDGE — Several new events are slated at both the Cambridge and Hurlock Senior centers giving folks aged 60 and older opportunities to be with others, have fun and learn a little something along the way. Science has proven isolation can lead to an increase in health issues and depression.
During the winter months some folks suffer from light deprivation. Senior centers attempt at this time of year to pump up activities and attract new people who just might find being with others truly worthwhile. Regular activities including a daily meal are a staple, but Delmarva Community Services hopes individuals and families might take a look at upcoming events and try a few.
• Community Thanksgiving Luncheon - This Thursday, Delmarva Community Services, Inc. will once again provide the annual Community Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon. A fabulous complete meal served by the Cambridge Rotary Club complete with entertainment and door prizes is open to all seniors. Cost is $2.50 per person. Call 410-221-1930 to save a seat.
• “Coffee with a Cop” is a monthly program open to all. Deputies from the Dorchester County Office of the Sheriff present topics every first Tuesday 10:15 at the Cambridge Senior Center and every second Tuesday of the month 10:30 at the Hurlock Center. Free coffee and great conversation is guaranteed, as well as a chance to express public safety concerns and questions.
• Medications with Melanie – Folks with questions about managing their medications are enjoying this program with Melanie Chapple of the University of Maryland Shore Regional Health System. Come ask questions the second Monday of each month at 11 a.m. at the Cambridge Center and the second Tuesday of each month 10:15 at the Hurlock Senior Center. Ms. Chapple specializes in decreasing barriers to taking medications and methods for communicating with doctors about medications. She can speak to people one to one about their concerns.
• Knit/Crochet Club meets 1 p.m. every Tuesday in the Cambridge Senior center. This casual, fun group is comprised of first-time and experienced folks who can learn a new project each week or who bring in their own project to work on while enjoying being with others.
• Positive Music Time – DJ Randy Potter takes folks on a musical journey each week with interactive musical activities.
• Best Lunch in Town – The DCS kitchen prepares and serves delicious lunches in its kitchen for all folks 60 and older to enjoy for only $2.50. Why eat alone when one can eat and chat with others Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in Cambridge and Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Hurlock? No membership, no obligation, just a great place to be for lunch.
Almost all programs at Dorchester Senior Centers are free. Meals and transportation are available at discounted rates for seniors. Staff are always interested in developing new programs around the interests of the general public and encourage people to call the center about ideas and needs.
