HURLOCK - Walter R. Layton Sr. 81, of Hurlock, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at Memorial Hospital at Easton. Born on June 28, 1928, in Salem, he was the son of the late William Haddaway Layton and Bessie Neal Layton. Mr. Layton was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. For many years he worked at Dupont, retiring in 1984. Following his retirement, he worked for Warren McWilliams at the grain mill in Shiloh. He was a member of Unity Washington United Methodist Church and a member of Hurlock American Legion Post 243. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Evelyn Layton of Hurlock whom he married on Feb. 15, 2003; two daughters, Cindy Eberspacher of Hurlock and her husband Ted, and Cathy Wheeler of Blairsville, Ga., and her husband John; seven grandchildren, Scott Eberspacher and his wife Karla, Eric Eberspacher, Alex Eberspacher, Christopher Wheeler and his wife Elicia, Jennifer Wheeler, Andrew Wheeler, and Kathryn Wheeler; one great-granddaughter, Ava Wheeler; two brothers, Ollie Layton of East New Market and Haddaway Layton of Salem; two sisters, Clara McKnett of Cambridge and Louise Gore of Salisbury; several nieces and nephews; a step-daughter, Jacquelyn Vincent of Farmington; four stepsons, Daniel Russum of Houston, Douglas Russum of Magnolia, David Russum of Dover, and Dennis Russum of Felton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Smith Layton who died Aug. 16, 2002; a son, Walter "Jack" Layton; and a sister, Hilda Willey. Graveside services were Monday, July 20, at Unity Washington Cemetery. Rev. Ruth Tull officiated. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Mr. Layton to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 163, Salisbury, MD 21803. The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
