CAMBRIDGE — On Sept. 12, 12 volunteers gathered from the Eastern Shore and beyond to participate in a milkweed planting at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The planting was part of an ongoing partnership project between Pickering Creek Audubon Center and Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Over the past three years students, faith community groups and businesses have worked together to connect people to the salt marshes of Dorchester County and restore parts of the damaged salt marsh habitat along iconic Wildlife Drive in the refuge. Saturday’s volunteers added 240 swamp and butterfly milkweed plants along the edge of a restored meadow, which serves as healthy habitat for a variety of pollinators, especially monarch butterflies. Pickering Creek Audubon Center offers salt marsh education programs to businesses, faith and community groups. Additional salt marsh restoration plantings will be conducted in April of 2016.
