CAMBRIDGE – There wasn’t a whole lot of suspense in this one. The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Vikings shut out the visiting Washington High School Jaguars at Friday’s Homecoming game, 76-0. The Jags were unable to move the ball either on the ground or through the air, and any progress they made was wiped out by nine turnovers, eight in the first half. The Vikes’ record climbed to 4-2 after the win, while the Jags fell to 0-6. Washington is a small 1A school in Somerset County, with few players who can effectively compete against the larger programs. C-SD is the biggest 1A school in the Bayside Conference, with enough talent that coaches can rotate players throughout a game, keeping them fresh, while a team without as much depth is forced to play the same few stalwarts on offense and defense. C-SD scored their first touchdown a little more than one minute into the contest, and it was off to the races after that. Literally - one breakaway play after another saw Viking ballcarriers sprinting into the end zone, chased by Jaguars who couldn’t quite make the play. C-SD Head Coach Gaven Parker gave his backups time in the game, especially in the second half. He also had some players in usual roles. Ethan Carmine, for instance, is more known for his long-snapping duties than for running the ball, but he was in the backfield for two carries, one a touchdown. “You can’t stop playing,” though the score was lop-sided, Coach Parker said after the game, noting that all his young men had been working hard and were ready to get on the field. “It was a program win.” The team will find itself in a more competitive environment on Friday, when the Vikings head to Salisbury to face Wicomico High School (2A). The Indians are 4-2 after beating Kent Island (2A) on Oct. 4, 27-3, The talented Kent Island squad was favored to win the game. The loss dropped the Buccaneers’ record to 4-2. Before Friday’s Homecoming game, a former player was remembered. Samuel Brisco, Class of 2002, died recently. He was honored with a moment of silence and a balloon release from a group of his family and friends, gathered at midfield. Game time Friday in Salisbury is 6:30 p.m.
