CAMBRIDGE — More than 45 years after the last American troops left Vietnam the Dorchester County Historical Society has chosen to recognize Dorchester’s service men and women who fought in the conflict. While it is very late in coming, the timing is finally right for some who served.

DCHS has conducted oral histories of some of these heroes over the last 10 months, capturing the realities of young men and women thrust into circumstances that were beyond their imagination.

Adding insult to injury were the receptions that many of these young veterans had upon returning to the United States, the Eastern Shore and Dorchester County. Suffice it to say they were not lauded as those who fought in the World Wars.

On Nov. 11 at 6 p.m, DCHS will host a Vietnam Veterans’ Recognition event. The public is invited.

Dorchester County Vietnam War service men and women will be honored with a color guard, special music, a pinning ceremony and more. A roundtable ceremony will be presented as will a special speaker, Nancy E. Lynch.

Ms. Lynch was a reporter in the 1970s and wrote a column that highlighted her correspondence from troops on the front lines. Vietnam Mailbag, Voices From the War: 1968-1972 shares stories and photos that are difficult and real. Ms. Lynch’s book will be for sale after the event.
