CAMBRIDGE - Valarie Mary Copper was born March 28, 1938, in Cambridge. She was the daughter of the late Rosie Major Cornish and Andrew Anthony Cornish. She departed her earthly life into her heavenly home on Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at Dorchester General Hospital. She received her formal education from Mace's Lane High School in Cambridge. She soon met and married the love of her life for the past 32 years, Donald Russell Copper Sr. She was a licensed foster parent for 20 years. She was employed at Coldwater Seafood for 30 years after working for several years retiring in 1999. Mrs. Copper enjoyed cooking, flowers and spending Christmas and Valentines Day's with her grandchildren. Sister Copper was an active member of The New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ Jesus, under the leadership of Bishop Clarence Cornish Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, James, Andrew, Melvin, and Larry Cornish; one sister, Ernestine; and a son, Dwight Copper. She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Donald Russell Copper Sr.; four sons, Rodgers Cornish of Easton, Frederick Johnson of Perryville, Kentrel Copper of Cambridge, and Donald (Portia) Copper of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a devoted daughter, Kimberly (Anthony) Hughes of Hurlock; her loving grandchildren, Roderick Dixon, Shavonya Cornish, Rasheen Johnson, Kimberly Boulden, Kambre Rideout, Treasure Hughes, Isaiah Hughes, Antoinette Hughes, Anthony Hughes Jr., and Javonta Saunders; six great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Mrs. Ludellia Copper; one brother, Bishop Clarence (Dora) Cornish; and two loving sisters, Audrey George and Mother Margret Cephas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A viewing was held from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 23, at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Hurlock. Services will be 1 p.m., today, Dec. 24, at Refuge Temple Church of God, 800 Robbins St., Cambridge.
