CAMBRIDGE – Turns out the day after Thanksgiving isn’t just for shopping and leftovers.
The Groove City Trekkers held a Family 5K Walk on Friday, covering the 3.1 miles with friends and relations of all ages.
“Our babies, aunties, uncles and around-the-way cousins came together for a family fun walk through the neighborhood,” a statement on social media said. “We skipped the Black Friday madness and invited our families to participate.”
The group is the largest public health nonprofit organization for African-American women and girls in the United States.
The Trekkers encourage women to use walking as a first step in promoting healthy living, families and communities. “As women organize walking teams, they mobilize community members to support monthly advocacy efforts and lead a civil rights-inspired health movement,” their website says.
The walkers had extra fun, seeing who could bring the most relatives to the event. Sheka Newton earned top marks in this, taking home a medal for her success.
The Trekkers followed their Friday event with a Super Hero Saturday Walk at the Visitor Center at Sailwinds Park East. To learn more about the group, visit Groove City Trekkers (Home Of Harriett Tubman) on Facebook.
