Disgraced former Sen. Bob Menendez arrives at prison to begin serving his 11-year bribery sentence

SUMMARY: Former U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez reported to federal prison on Tuesday to begin serving an 11-year sentence for accepting bribes of gold and cash and acting as an agent of Egypt. The federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the New Jersey Democrat is in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution, Schuylkill in Minersville, Pennsylvania. The facility has both a medium-security prison and a minimum-security prison camp. Menendez resigned from the Senate last year after his conviction. Many lawmakers named in writings of suspected Minnesota shooter vow not to bow down

SUMMARY: From a legislator in downtown Minneapolis to a veteran Ohio congresswoman, many lawmakers included in the suspected Minnesota gunman’s writings and list of targets are vowing not to bow down. An acting U.S. Attorney says the dozens of politicians included in the suspect’s writing were Democrats. While some say the violence has prompted them to double down on their legislative work, at least one lawmaker postponed a town hall after learning she was a potential target.

US--SEXUAL MISCONDUCT-DIDDY

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs probably won’t testify as defense says its case could be less than 2 days

SUMMARY: Hopes that Sean “Diddy” Combs might testify at his federal sex trafficking trial have faded after his lawyer predicted a defense presentation lasting two to five days. The defense made the estimate Tuesday when the judge asked how long their case would last. Prosecutors hope to rest Wednesday after presenting evidence for six weeks. The judge says the jury could begin deliberations next week. The 55-year-old Combs has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges. The judge also scolded prosecutors and defense lawyers on Tuesday, saying information about a closed court proceeding involving a juror last Friday was leaked to a media outlet.

US--UTAH-NO KINGS DEATH-THINGS TO KNOW

What to know about the shooting that killed a demonstrator at a Utah ‘No Kings’ rally

SUMMARY: The “No Kings” protest in Salt Lake City was struck by violence when a man allegedly brandished a rifle near the crowd. That prompted a volunteer for the event to fire three shots, hitting both the alleged gunman and a protester who later died, police and event organizers say. Arturo Gamboa never shot his rifle, but police said they arrested him on a murder charge because he created the dangerous situation that led to the death of protester Arthur Folasa Ah Loo. Ah Loo was a celebrated fashion designer from Samoa. Police say they are investigating whether the man who shot Gamboa and Ah Loo was justified in firing his gun.

SUMMARY: Early Saturday morning, when a man dressed like a police officer knocked at the home of a Minnesota state legislator, marked the start of nearly 40 hours of violence and fear that swept through towns in an arc around Minneapolis. A man seemingly intent on sowing political devastation across the region killed one Minnesota lawmaker and left another bleeding from nine bullet wounds. US spies said Iran wasn’t building a nuclear weapon. Trump dismisses that assessment

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has dismissed the assessment of U.S. spy agencies that Iran wasn’t building a nuclear weapon before the latest conflict with Israel. Trump’s national intelligence director, Tulsi Gabbard, told Congress in March that Iran’s supreme leader had not reauthorized the dormant program. Trump told reporters Tuesday he doesn’t care what Gabbard said and Iran is “very close” to having a bomb. Gabbard brushes off the inconsistency, saying she and Trump are “on the same page.” Gabbard blames the media for misconstruing her earlier testimony and tells CNN that Trump is saying the same thing she said. Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful.

US--CONGRESS-TAX CUTS

Senate Republicans seek tougher Medicaid cuts and lower SALT deduction in Trump’s big bill

SUMMARY: Senate Republicans are proposing deeper Medicaid cuts, including new work requirements for parents of teens, as a way to offset the costs of making President Donald Trump’s tax breaks more permanent. They are keeping in place an existing $10,000 annual cap on state and local tax deductions known as SALT. But they boost a tax credit for some seniors to $6,000. The proposals unveiled Monday by Republicans for Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” provide the most comprehensive look yet at changes the GOP senators want to make to the package approved by House Republicans last month. US--AP POLL-GOVERNMENT SPENDING

Americans want Medicaid and food stamps funding maintained or increased, AP-NORC poll shows

SUMMARY: A new poll shows most U.S. adults don’t think the government is overspending on the programs Republicans in Congress have focused on cutting, like Medicaid and food stamps. The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll shows Americans broadly support increasing or maintaining existing levels of funding for popular safety net programs, including Social Security and Medicare. They’re more divided on spending around the military and border security. As Republican senators debate President Donald Trump’s bill that could slash federal spending and extend tax cuts, the survey points to a disconnect between Republicans’ policy agenda and public sentiment around the domestic programs that are up for debate.

The government faces growing pressure to address widespread fraud and abuse that plagued its adoption program, particularly during a heyday in the 1970s and 1980s when the country allowed thousands of children to be adopted every year.
