EAST NEW MARKET - Sylvia Maria deJongh Casey, 86, of East New Market, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. Sylvia was born on Oct. 27, 1924, in Roanoke Va., the 4th child of the late Georgie Jones deJongh and Peter deJongh. Sylvia, her husband John Casey, and their children lived and worked in Silver Spring, Md., for over twenty-five years. After Sylvia retired from the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in 1975, she and John began building their dream retirement home where the family had spent many memorable summers. In 1976 Sylvia and John moved into their beautiful new home on Green Point Road in Secretary, Md. Following John's death in 1978, Sylvia remained active in the community where she had many close friends and acquaintances. Sylvia became such an icon within the small hamlets of East New Market and Hurlock, the townsfolk referred to her as "Miss Sylvia." Sylvia is survived by her son, John W. Casey III and his wife Laura of Jeffersonton, Va.; her daughter, Mary Sue Roney of Catonsville, Md.; six grandchildren, Shannon, Patrick, Michael, Samantha, Jamie and Casey; two great-grandchildren, Madeline and Ian; and long-time companion, T. Hamill Smith Jr. of East New Market. In addition to her parents and husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by her daughter Donna Wick. A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Zeller Funeral Home, East New Market, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Mr. David Tolley will officiate.
