CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge Main Street was forced to cancel its Summer Sendoff due to rain and the threat of thunderstorms on Sept. 12, but will offer a similar street festival on Oct. 3 in conjunction with IronMan Maryland.

IronFest will also happen from 5-10 p.m. and feature food, drinks and live entertainment.

“After all of the work to pull Summer Sendoff together, I didn’t particularly enjoy having to make the decision to cancel,” said Cambridge Main Street Executive Director Brandon Hesson. “It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make so far, but there were public safety concerns, and it wasn’t really a night where people were likely to turn out.”

Cambridge Main Street had more than 30 vendors, restaurants and local community groups scheduled to set up during Summer Sendoff, and they will all be invited back for IronFest, as will sponsors RAR Brewing and RPS ISG International.

This is not the first time Cambridge Main Street has paired one of its downtown events with IronMan Maryland, one of only 12 full-distance IronMan events in North America. Last year, Summer Sendoff ran in conjunction with the innaugural running of the event, providing entertainment to locals, participants and other visitors at the turnaround downtown at the intersection of Gay and Poplar streets.

“We’ve had a great relationship with IronMan, and this is an equation we are familiar with,” said Mr. Hesson. “We already had three local bands, beer and food lined up before we even had to cancel Summer Sendoff, because it’s a great event and so many people in our community want to be a part of it.”

The RAR Brewing Main Stage will feature Dorchester County musicians Bobby Reed, Dave Hawkins and Blackwater. The RPS ISG International Speedway, where the unique relay race called the Main Street Mile, is also being adjusted to happen on Oct. 3.
