CAMBRIDGE — There’s help on the way for local revitalization projects. At a meeting with city and county officials on Jan. 6, Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Sec. Kenneth Holt announced a $510,000 grant for Cannery Park to help fund the rehabilitation of that site off Cedar Street.

He also said his department will be the primary tenant in the Packing House, across the street from Cannery Park. The former Phillips Packing Co. factory is currently going through an extension renovation process, which will leave the brick structure with offices, shops and restaurants.

“Building on the Eastern Shore’s deep tradition of agricultural and fishing assets, the $22,000,000, 60,000 square foot historic Phillips Packing House Building will be designed to support and grow regional economic opportunities connected to agriculture, aquaculture, environmental technologies, and tourism,” an online statement from developers says.

At Cannery Park, a disused rail line will be removed to create a walking trail. The park includes the silted-up southern end of Cambridge Creek, which is being opened with strengthened shorelines featuring thousands of plants placed by volunteers.

The $510,000 joins about $1 million already collected for the job.
