CAMBRIDGE — Some of Dorchester County’s most respected and well loved friends and neighbors gathered on the bank of the Choptank River Thursday to receive awards as Stars of the Banner and 2021 Hometown Heroes.
Both categories were filled with the nominees and choices of the Banner’s readers, who picked their favorite businesses in — the Stars — and the special people who give selflessly to their community, the Heroes.
“These citizens continue to make their contributions,” often without public acknowledgement, Banner Publisher Darel LaPrade said in his welcoming remarks. “It’s always the right time to lend a helping hand.”
The mission of the Banner and its associated publications is to promote a sense of community and common cause, Mr. LaPrade said.
Businesses included a variety of retail and service operations, whose loyal customers wanted to recognize for their contributions. The Heroes featured folks in the medical and emergency response fields, as well non-profit outreach, among others.

Plaques were presented to the winners during the afternoon and evening event, which featured live music by local favorite Tranzfusion, as well as displays, booths and products from nominees and winners.
