CAMBRIDGE – The local economy took another step forward on Oct. 31, when the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Starbucks store. The business is located in Cambridge Marketplace on U.S. 50, where development is continuing.

When that celebration concluded, many of those present took a short walk over to another, the unveiling of a mural on the property. Artist Michael Rosato’s latest work is titled, “Marsh Song,” and depicts Eastern Shore scenes.

Cambridge Marketplace is being built by Fairchild Properties, LLC.

“This is a treat for all of us,” President Charlie Fairchild said. Speaking in Starbucks’ dining room full of local officials and members of the business community, he added, “I feel that we’re a family. To have this many people here today, we’re in awe.”

President of the County Council Ricky Travers (District 3) said, “This is watching the seeds grow out of the ground that we planted many years ago.” The Marketplace is undergoing extensive renovations. Some new businesses are already open, while other work, including a new medical facility, have yet to begin.

“It’s a blessing to have someone like Charlie Fairchild, who believes in our city,” Mr. Travers said.

Then it was off across the parking lot to the new mural, located near the fountains at main entrance to the property and the new Taco Bell. The mural was sponsored by Fairchild Properties.

“We wanted to have some fun and give Michael a chance to express what the Eastern Shore means to him,” Mr. Fairchild said. “For me, the lady bugs represent our grandchildren; the hummingbird, my wife Sue; the white perch, my grandson’s first catch; and the wood ducks were chosen by a local Cambridge hunting guide and friend. We hope everyone will come, sit and listen to the fountains, while ‘Marsh Song’ speaks to them.”

Mr. Fairchild has earned national aclaim for his creations, which are found across the country.

“It’s always incredible to stand in front of people who have such nice things to say,” Mr. Rosato said with a smile. “Dorchester offers so much. You just have to drive around to get inspired.”
