CAMBRIDGE – This weekend, Dorchester Center for the Arts presents the Second Annual Chalk Arts Festival “Making Big Waves – Creating Healing Waves One Chalk Line at a Time” to be held Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
The location for the 2023 outdoor festival is the Dorchester County Office Building - both the parking lot and waterfront grounds of 501 Court Lane in Cambridge. In the event of rain, the festival will be held at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School at 2475 Cambridge Beltway in Cambridge.
A band of visiting chalk artists from across the country will join this two-day event; artists selected by the “Chalk Mafia” Facebook group to participate with Hoopers Island’s Chalk Artist Ed Krell. There will be a chalk art workshop for all ages on-site led by Lori Antoinette of California each day of the event and opportunities for the public to experience this interactive medium at the festival as well.
The festival is a free, family-friendly event where attendees walk through the art-making area to watch the process and meet the artists. Come on Saturday morning to see how it all begins and circle back on Sunday to be amazed by the finished pieces.
There will also be entertainment by local live bands throughout both days along with food, art and nonprofit vendors from Dorchester County. Mental health information by local organizations working in the field will be presented on the music stage as well as in between sets.
The event will also include a Dorchester County Public Schools Visiting Artist Day on Friday. More than 300 students will have a chance to work with the chalk artists, with the resulting work to be displayed in the County Building Atrium during the weekend festival.
For more information, contact festival coordinator Melissa Cooperman at mcooperman@dorchesterarts.org.
The community is invited to participate in this free live art event. Spaces are being offered for people or groups that would like to chalk, with recognition at the end for adults and youth groups.
Visit dorchesterarts.org to find the registration link, or just come to the festival ready to make some art. Chalk will be provided.
