CAMBRIDGE - The July exhibition at Dorchester Center for the Arts highlights work by untrained, or outsider, artists. Entitled “Outside In,” it features pieces by renowned artists Mose and Annie Tolliver and Howard Finster, who have had their paintings exhibited at venues such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the American Visionary Art Museum. Finster even appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” and created album covers for R.E.M. and Talking Heads.
Other artists included in the show work with unusual materials such as seeds (Jim Buhler), glass, (The Glassman), a produce crate (Zane Campbell), and even a bushel basket lid (Glenn Shiring). Visitors to the exhibit will also find drawings and paintings by artists with local connections, including John Root Hopkins, Terry White, Danny Doughty, John Englehart and Larry Scott.
Ed Krell, of Hoopers Island, will be exhibiting his large-scale chalk pieces, and will also be on hand to discuss his art at the Second Saturday reception on July 9 from 5-7 p.m. The reception will feature light refreshments and live music by Marianne and the Misfits, the duo of Marianne Styles and Jon Jacobs that hails from Hoopers Island. Their music is a mix of country, folk rock, rock and a bit of alternative indie music. The reception is free, and all are welcome to attend.
Also on Second Saturday, Jim Loretangeli will perform live in the George B. Todd Performance Hall from 7-8:30 p.m. He will be performing material from his two solo albums, “All the World” and “The Right Angel.” The music contains elements of progressive rock, jazz fusion and new age, and draws from Jim’s influences, including Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Frank Zappa, Sting, Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Patrick O’Hearn, Mike Oldfield, and others. It is best described simply as “textures with a pulse.” Tickets are $10, and available on Eventbrite or online at dorchesterarts.org.
