Spectrum: Coming in May to Dorchester Center for the Arts

Posted

Two new exhibits will fill the galleries for May at DCA.

The Front Gallery will feature “What is Art Therapy? Eastern Shore Hospital Center Patient Art - Through the Ages.” In recognition of National Mental Health Month, Judy Slaughter, director of volunteer services for the Eastern Shore Hospital Center Auxiliary, has curated this exhibition to include 45 patient art pieces in various mediums that will be for sale, as well as five larger pieces that are not for sale from the auxiliary collection. Proceeds from the sales benefit each individual patient artist. The Eastern Shore Hospital Center is a psychiatric facility located in Cambridge, owned and operated by the state of Maryland, under the Maryland Department of Health.

In the Main Gallery, “The Annual Young People’s Show” will feature the work of school-age youth in Dorchester County. The show will be judged, with awards presented for first, second and third place in elementary, middle and high school entries. Additionally, one Best in Show, Top Digital Work, Top Fine Art and Top Interpretation will be selected from the full exhibit.

A Second Saturday Artists’ Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held May 14 from 5 to 7 p.m., with refreshments and live music by Emma Bailey. Admission is free and all are welcome.

To continue the focus on youth, a concert in the George B. Todd Performance Hall will follow the gallery reception. “Mike Elzey’s Student Showcase” features talented young students ages 6-17 years old. For decades, Mike has been an instructor and mentor for young musicians on the Eastern Shore. He and his instructors have taught thousands of children and adults to play and enjoy music through lessons, camps and workshops. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10, with children under 12 free. Tickets are available at mikeelzeysguitarstudio.com or by cash at the door.

For additional program information, visit online at dorchesterarts.org. Dorchester Center for the Arts, as the designated County Arts Council for Dorchester, is committed to increasing access to the arts for all members of the community by supporting extensive outreach and educational opportunities in the arts.

Located at 321 High Street in Cambridge, DCA is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. Programs are supported by the Maryland State Arts Council. For the latest, find DCA on Facebook.
