Spectrum: Chalk Arts Festival returning to Dorchester

CAMBRIDGE – The Dorchester Center for the Arts is excited to announce the Second Annual Chalk Arts Festival “Making Big Waves – Creating Healing Waves One Chalk Line at a Time” to be held Oct. 28-29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The event has the support of Dorchester Center for the Arts, Dorchester County and the Hoopers Island community that supported the first one and will host a special artist event before this year’s festival begins.

The location for the 2023 Festival is the Dorchester County Office Building - both the parking lot and waterfront grounds of 501 Court Lane, Cambridge. The event will also include a Dorchester County Public Schools Visiting Artist Day on Oct. 27.

A band of 10 visiting chalk artists from across the country will join this two-day event; artists selected by the “Chalk Mafia” Facebook group to participate with Hoopers Island’s Chalk Artist Ed Krell.

There will be a chalk art workshop for all ages on-site led by Lori Antoinette of LAntArt.com each day of the event and opportunities for the public to experience this interactive medium at the festival.

The festival is a free, family-friendly event held rain or shine, as attendees walk through the art-making area to watch the process and meet the artists. Come on Saturday morning to see how it all begins and circle back on Sunday to be amazed by the finished pieces.

There will also be entertainment by local live bands throughout both days along with food, art and nonprofit vendors from Dorchester County. Mental health information by local organizations working in the field will be presented on the music stage, as well, in between sets.

Vendors and sponsors are invited to apply. For more information, contact festival coordinator Melissa Cooperman: mcooperman@dorchesterarts.org.

The community is invited to participate in this free live art event. Spaces are being offered for people or groups that would like to chalk, with recognition at the end for adults and youth groups. Visit dorchesterarts.org to find the registration link. Chalk will be provided.
