CAMBRIDGE — Two residents of this city saw a need, and decided to use their skills to make a difference. Armah Dashiell of A Voice for Our Community LLC, and Raymond Farrare of Lost Kingz, want to provide needy kids with new sneakers to wear when they head back to school this fall. To that end, they started the Bless the Child Back 2 School Sneaker Drive. Recently, Armah and Ray appeared on the Delmarva Life TV show to broadcast their appeal to the region. On the show they asked for donations to the cause, as well as encouraging the parents of needy children to contact them and register for a pair of shoes. “It’s a little complicated,” said Mr. Dashiell in an interview with The Banner, “because shoes of course come in various sizes. We want to encourage those who can donate new shoes to do so, and those who can donate money to the cause to help as well. We need to have the recipients register in advance because we have to be able to provide shoes in the proper size.” Armah and Ray ask that parents who would like their children included in the program to please contact them as soon as possible, for a registration deadline of Aug. 15. The Sneaker Drive drew a lot of response after appearing on Delmarva Life, and it appears to be heading for a very successful finish for the first year of the drive. The drive will culminate on Aug. 22, with an event at the Octavene H. Saunders Empowerment Center at 615B High St. in Cambridge, where shoes will be distributed in a ceremony attended by the Bless the Child principles and community leaders. The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Donations are encouraged, right up to the last minute, by contacting Lost Kingz, care of the Jubilee Christian Fellowship Church, P.O. Response has been very encouraging for the new charity. “We have a lot of need here, on the Eastern Shore,” said Mr. Dashiell, “and we want to fill that need. It’s an act that brings us together as a community.”
