The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School boys’ junior varsity basketball team beat visiting North Caroline, 60-44.[/caption] CAMBRIDGE — Being short-handed didn’t stop the Vikings’ junior varsity boys’ basketball team from earning a 60-44 win Feb. 11 against the visiting North Caroline High School Bulldogs. C-SD’s six available JV players - Jose Rodriguez, Tre Bordley, Dajour Jones, Darius Woolford, Ivory Buck and Ayonbre Wongus - showed their courage and their conditioning, as five would take on their opponents while one caught his breath on the bench. Darius led the home team’s attack, racking up 26 points, including a 10-point second-quarter that featured a pretty hook shot to give the Vikes an 11-10 lead at 6:40. Young Mr. Woolford followed that with a 3-pointer at 5:20 left in the second quarter, bringing the score to 17-10. A surging offense coupled with good defensive rebounding helped the Vikings to take charge, as the half ended with a 26-12 C-SD lead. The Vikings maintained their lead in the second half. Ivory Buck sank a 3-point shot with 20 seconds left to put an exclamation mark on the third quarter, which ended 44-29. But things got interesting in the final period, when the Bulldogs had their starters back in the game. With 6:07 left, and the score 44-33, Head Coach Tommy Frazier called a timeout. “Are we going to give it away?” he asked, as his men gathered around him by the bench. “Play some D here. Everybody rebound.” The Vikes got the message, finding the desire and the energy to shut down the visitors as time expired.
