LOCH HAVEN, Pa. — It was a break from the bigger powerboats he usually races, but it worked out fine for John Shaw at the Loch Haven Labor Day Regatta. The event was authorized by the American Power Boat Association. “Ended up third in AXH and second in A Hydro,” Mr. Shaw said on social media. “Not bad for not being in an outboard in over a year.” Mr. Shaw is a resident of Dorchester County, where he works as a teacher at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School. When he is not teaching or racing, he also coaches pole vault with the track and field team – he was a successful vaulter in college – and helps on the cross country team in the fall. It takes a dedicated team to support a driver, and it can even be a family affair. “It was so nice being able to hang out with Dad in the pits all weekend,” Mr. Shaw said. “Thanks to Keith and Kevin, Shane, Paul for letting me borrow his gear, my driving Coach Nicholas, and Charlie for the opportunity. Can’t wait to do this more often.” But first, there’s more traveling to do. Mr. Shaw will head out to Spanaway, Wash., for the Western Divisionals on Saturday.
