CAMBRIDGE – Wintery weather didn’t stop Dorchester’s seniors from packing the house Thursday at Delmarva Community Services, Inc. for the annual Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon. Approximately 200 people came together to share a delicious Thanksgiving feast prepared by DCS staff which was served to them by the Cambridge Rotary club and students of Vision Quest. Elected officials met their constituents, including representatives of the offices of United States Senators Ben Cardin (D) and Chris Van Hollen (D), Congressman Andy Harris’ (R-1) office, Governor Larry Hogan’s (R) office, State Senator Addie Eckardt (R-37), newly-elected County Councilmen Jay Newcomb and Lenny Pfeffer, as well as City Commissioners Rob Hanson and Steve Rideout. Area Agency on Aging Director Patti Tingle spoke to the crowd about two innovative programs available that will benefit seniors. A presentation was made about the newly formed inter-generational walking club which pairs seniors with young children who meet weekly to walk together to learn about local neighborhoods and about each other. The walking club was made possible by a grant from the Dorchester County Health Department. CEO of Delmarva Community Services Santo Grande expressed his appreciation for Dorchester’s seniors, who have contributed so much to their families and communities along the way. “If there is anything you need, please, please ask us to help. DCS is here for you,” he said. He then asked the audience for a round of applause for all the seniors. Dr. Grande also commended the Cambridge Rotary Club whose members have volunteered to serve the Thanksgiving luncheon for 20 years. The best part of the program, Mr. Grande said, “was hearing seniors talk about what they were grateful for: friends and family, good food, good health and for being alive”.
