CAMBRIDGE — May 20 was special, the last official day of school for the Dorchester County Public Schools Class of 2020. But they didn’t get there alone.

Students, families and friends faced the challenges of social restrictions, and created a unique celebration for that afternoon, something all could enjoy as they marked the successful completion of high school.

Management at the Hyatt Resort allowed signs featuring graduates to be set up on the property, and then welcomed the grads to cruise the route while being greeted by some of their teachers and administrators.

A statement from the schools said, “Parents, teachers, and everyone who loves a member of the Class of 2020: Pause for a moment today and reflect upon your role in the lives of these precious and amazing young people as they prepare to burst forth upon the world and how, through them, you have already touched the future. And then, celebrate them!”

Participants were urged to observe distancing rules to slow the spread of COVID-19. “Please, it is important that everyone remains in their cars at all times and stays safe,” the statement said.

The signs were set up in the afternoon by teachers, staff and volunteers. The tour ran from 4-8 p.m., when the signs were removed. They will be returned to the schools, where they were put on display again before being given to each graduate this week.
