Sally Barnes Parks

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Sally Barnes Parks, 79, of Southern Pines, N.C., and Crisfield, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Tara Plantation in Carthage. Born in Pocomoke City, Md., on April 15, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Rome Lankford and Kate Lawson Barnes. Mrs. Parks moved to Crisfield, Md., at the age of 9, where she grew up, married, and raised two children. She was the owner/operator of the Kozy Korner Restaurant in Crisfield, Md. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Parks, Jr. (Sonny); and by her son, John Lankford Parks (Lank); two sisters, Kathryn Barnes Whittington, and Lillian Barnes Ward; and a brother, Robert Barnes, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Parks moved to Southern Pines in June 1997. She is survived by the following family, her daughter, Ann Parks Whitley and husband, Ron, of Pinehurst; her grandson, Joshua Edward Whitley and wife Jennifer of Lumberton; her granddaughter, Katie Whitley Barrett and husband Rob of Pinehurst; her granddaughter, Kelly Parks Taylor and husband Michael of Crisfield; and four great-granddaughters, Dean Kathryn Whitley, Charley Ann Whitley, Lawson Ann Barrett, and Caroline Whitley Barrett. A memorial service was 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Asubry United Methodist Church, Crisfield, with Rev. Sally Russom presiding. The family received friends at the home of Ted and Susan Smith following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to FirstHealth Hospice, 150 Applecross Rd., Pinehurst, NC 28374.
