CAMBRIDGE - Ruth Hughes Adkins, 91, passed away at her home on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2007.

She was born at Toddville on April 15, 1916, and was a daughter of the late Howard and Flossie Estella Meredith Hughes.

She attended schools at Andrews. On Nov. 21, 1940, she was married to Leon M. Adkins. He passed away on March 26, 2007.

Mrs. Adkins had worked in the local sewing factories and later worked for Montgomery Ward in Cambridge for a number of years. She enjoyed taking care of her granddaughters and her great-grandsons as well as crocheting and cooking.

Mrs. Adkins was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday school, Bible School and had been involved in the church circles.

Mrs. Adkins had been in failing health for the past seven months.

Survivors include a daughter, Anna Ruth Pope and her husband, David Pope of Cambridge; two granddaughters, Dee Mills and her husband, Steve Mills Sr. of Woolford and Michelle R. Pope of Cambridge; two great-grandsons, Stevie Mills Jr. and David "Cole" Mills. She is also survived by a brother, Kenneth L. Hughes and his wife, Iris Hughes of Cambridge; one sister, Henrietta Jarrett and husband, James Jarrett of Madison and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilson Hughes and Hal Hughes and her stepmother, Beulah Hughes.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 205 Maryland Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race St., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Pallbearers will be Steve Mills Sr., Stevie Mills Jr., Cole Mills, David Pope, Gary White, Eddie Bramble, Tim McCarter and Ben McCarter.
