CAMBRIDGE — Members of the Rotary Club of Cambridge have created a patriotic display of flags in honor of Memorial Day. The rows of Stars and Stripes were placed at the Sailwinds Park amphitheater on Thursday by a group of club members and other volunteers. Ed Connelly spoke about Rotary’s Flags for Heroes Program during the County Council’s meeting on May 15, saying the flags would be visible to motorists crossing into Dorchester County on the Sen. Frederick C. Malkus Jr. Bridge. “It’s really a great welcome into Cambridge,” Mr. Connelly said. Many of the flagpoles featured plaques with the names and service details of local servicemen and women, placed there for a $50 donation. “Proceeds go to veterans’ programs,” Mr. Connelly said. On Thursday, Rotary members were hard at work, measuring and marking spots on the berm, as three young men from the Morningstar Academy used augers to drill holes for the flag poles. Gerry Boyle was there, also wearing his triathlon hat — Mr. Boyle also organizes the annual races. “Ironman is sponsoring $500 for this,” he said, adding that the display will stay up until after the Eagleman race, so the hundreds of visitors from around the country and the world will have a chance to view it.
