MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - SFC Robert McLane Stokes Sr. passed away at his home on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born on Sept. 2, 1943, in Cambridge, Md., a son of the late Ernie McLane and Agnes Mae Stokes. Bob served in the Maryland Army National Guard for more than 35 years in several positions. He retired in 2000 and later moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to do what he loved, play golf. He was a member of Cambridge High School's Class of 1961. An outstanding athlete, Bob played for the CHS Championship basketball team. Upon graduation, he worked as a truck driver for Dayton's Oil Company and Wise Oil and Fuel, delivering oil with his faithful golden retriever, Taffy. He also supported the Dorchester County Parks and Recreation League, serving as an umpire for many years with his brother, Wayne. Bob was a member of the American Legion, the Moose and St. Michael Catholic Church. Along with his parents, SFC Stokes was preceded in death by a son, Robert M. Stokes Jr.; a brother, Wayne Stokes and his former wife, Joyce A. Stokes. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Stokes; two sons, Bryan Stokes and his wife, Stephanie of Seaford, Del.; Ed Stokes of Cambridge; a daughter, Teresa Stokes Reed and her husband, George of Hurlock; step-son, James Valero and wife, Charlene of New Jersey; grandchildren, Christi and Denny Hall of Cambridge; Brittany Stokes of Cambridge; and Giana and AJ Valero of New Jersey, as well as five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Ernie Stokes and his wife, Sandi of Hurlock; sisters, Karen Carpenter and husband, David of Seaford, Del.; Tippie Stokes and Willie Jones of Linkwood; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A mass will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Murrell's Inlet, SC. Arrangements are being handled by Goldfinch Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach, SC. www.goldfinchfuneralhome.com. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Cambridge.
