Robert Henry Gibson Jr., 89, known as Bobby, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007, at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
Bobby was born April 21, 1918 in Kansas City, Mo. He was the son of the late Robert Henry Gibson Sr. and the late Hazel Johnson Gibson. The late Emma Gibson Allen of New York was instrumental in Bobby's upbringing.
He was educated in the New York City public school system. After graduation from Madison High School, Mr. Gibson enlisted in the military. He served in the United States Army and the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the following decorations and citations: Bronze Star Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal; and a Good Conduct Medal. His tour of duty included Belgium; Central Europe; Normandy; Rhineland; and Southern France.
Mr. Gibson retired from Talbot County Public Schools where he worked as a custodian. Up until his health prevented him from doing so, he worked as a pressman for Talbot Cleaners in Easton.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. For many years, Mr. Gibson and his wife of 37 years, Eleanor W. Gibson, were members of the Talbot County Road Runners Club where they were known as Pressman & Presslady. Mr. Gibson was a life member of both the American Legion Post 77 and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 5118.
In addition to his wife, Eleanor, those surviving include a daughter, Yvonne Pickett of Bronx, N.Y.; seven stepchildren, Shirley Woolford of Chicago, Ill., Ann Jackson (John) of Des Moines, Iowa, Doris Woolford of Easton, Harry Woolford of Denton, Francis Allen of Easton, Russell Allen of Baltimore, Donnie Allen of Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lucille Sheppard of Easton; a goddaughter, Tara Newman-Bell (James) of Easton; two first cousins, Mamie Roberts of Easton, Edith Hayman of Unionville, and a number of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 18 S. Higgins St. in Easton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, also at Asbury Union Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. William Johnson will officiate. The Rev. Donnie D. Allen will be the Eulogist. Burial will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery, Hurlock.
