Robert Alexander Crawley Jr., 76
BALTIMORE - Robert Alexander Crawley Jr., 76, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008 at the Veterans' Hospital in Baltimore, MD after a lengthy illness. He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, father-in-law, and friend.
Born on April 25, 1932 in Chance, to the late Robert Crawley Sr. and Olive Crawley Conway, Robert Jr. was affectionately known as "Bobbie" to most, and "Pop" to his grandchildren. e was raised in Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Cambridge, where his family was attended. He attended until his graduation from the Frederick Douglass St. Clair High School, at which time, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
Bobbie retired from the U.S. Army in 1975 as a Master Sergeant after serving more than 20 years as a microwave satellite communications specialist. He later received an Associate's Degree from Chabot College, Hayward, Calif. After the Army, he worked as a contractor for Raytheon in Turkey and at the Air Force's South Atlantic missile range on Ascension Island.
He was a member of American Legion Post 0297, Baltimore.
Throughout the years, Bobbie always made time to come home to visit family and friends. He always kept the date of the All Classes Reunion on his calendar. It was a special time for him to celebrate his 60th high school class reunion with his classmates in 2004.
He is survived by five children (twins, Robert III and Rodney Crawley, Daphne Sanders, Damara Chambers, and Vanessa Landon-Crawley); two sons-in-law, Kevin Chambers and Edward Sanders; three sisters (Winfreda Cannon, Olivia Stanley, Iris Johnson), and very special friends (Darlene Waters, Mable Keene, and Gloria Thompson). He also leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters (Delores Lum and Rhoda Jackson).
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, at Bethel AME Church, 623 Pine St Cambridge. Viewing services will be held on Sunday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Henry Funeral Home, PA, 510 Washington St., Cambridge and one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial at the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery, Hurlock.
