Kool-Ice steamed and delivered 109 bushels of crabs to the Feast-i-Val.

CAMBRIDGE — The Rescue Fire Company benefit, the Seafood Feast-I-Val, satisfied a huge crowd of enthusiastic eaters this past Saturday.

Estimated attendance at this year’s annual crab and seafood feast is right around 1,200 to 1,500, according to Ricky Travers, chairman of the event.

The event is held as a fundraiser for the fire company, and though the accounting won’t be finished until the end of the week, last year Rescue Fire Company netted almost $20,000 from the event, and hopes to either come close or match last year’s figures.

“We won’t know for sure until we total up all the numbers,” Mr. Travers stated, “until we have all the expenses accounted for. But we’re figuring on doing okay this year.”

One thing they were sure of on Monday morning was how much food was consumed. Kool Ice delivered and distributed 109 bushels of steamed crabs, and Johnny Shockley’s Hooper Island Oyster Company served 2,000 oysters. There were 1,200 pieces of chicken barbecued and eaten, 1,400 ears of corn, 150 gallons of tomatoes, 52 gallons of crab soup, 350 pounds of fried fish, untold quantities of French fries and sweet potato fries, and 90 watermelons. The overall opinion is that nobody went home hungry.

“The best part is that we had a great crew of volunteers, and we were cleaned up and done two hours after the last bus departed,” said Mr. Travers.
