50 years ago - The new baseball coach at Mace’s Lane High, Kenny Edgar, says his 1968 club, “is young but shows a lot of promise.” Edgar, former basketball coach at Snow Hill High, is satisfied with his pitching up to date, but questions how many runs the Tigers will score. “Our pitching is better than average.

Tyrone Elliott will be my number-one starter the way things look now, with Lionel Majors and Donald Jones also in the rotation,” Coach Edgar said. He plans to use Rodney Wheatley behind the plate.

He is the brother of last year’s starting catcher Lewis Wheatley. The infield appears to be Donald Jones at first, sophomore Gary Chester at second, Greg Holland at short, and Granville Young at the hot corner.

The outfield will probably be Lewis Chester, Colvin Camper and Lionel Majors. Only three seniors appear in this starting lineup. “It appears a cinch that my numbers three and four hitters will be Young and Holland,” Coach Edgar said. “They hit the ball real good.”

Also bucking for extensive action are Noble Rogers, Royce Butler, Alton Chester, Ronald Purnell, Thomas Payne, Anthony Strawberry, Leon Dorsey, Emerson Payton and Benjamin Wheatley.

100 years ago - One of the most successful meetings in the interest of the sale of War Savings Stamps in this county was held at Crapo Wednesday evening of last week. An enthusiastic, patriotic audience comfortably filled the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal Church, and after stirring addresses by Col. Albanus Phillips, Hon. Josiah I. Kerr, and Prof. J.B. Noble, did their bit for Uncle Sam by pledging to lend that good old democratic gentleman $11,310 in his war against, “Kulture.”

The entertaining features of the meeting were short, but pleasing, Caraline Wingate, in “Our Flag,” receiving especial praise for poise and deliverance. Miss Hilda Wheatley gave an interesting and timely reading on the history of the national anthem, and four pupils of the intermediate department of the Crapo High School, under the direction of Miss Elsie Insley, vice principal, presented, “Raising the Flag.”
