Raymond Schmidt Jr.

TRAPPE - Raymond "Sonny" Schmidt, Jr., died on Sunday, December 25, 2011, at his home in Trappe. He was 70. Born on October 1, 1941, in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Raymond and Audrey Cox Schmidt, Sr. Sonny attended school in Dorchester County. During his working years he worked as an iron worker with Local 16 in Baltimore. He also worked on the water and in his spare time built his present home, a log cabin with a stone fire place. He was a member of Trappe United Methodist Church and a former member of the Trappe Lions Club. Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his vegetable garden. Sonny is survived by his former wife, Leona Chance whom he married in 1962; his two sons, Joe Schmidt (Cindy) and Brian Schmidt(Cathy); seven grandchildren, J.R., Ali, Cole, Hannah, Natalie, Will and Josh; two great-grandchildren, Abby and Kirby; two sisters, Grace Smullen and Bernice Davis; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his pet companion "Gator". In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Leslie Schmidt; and his brother, Hildon Leslie Schmidt. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at Trappe United Methodist Church. Graveside services were held at the Woodlawn Memorial Park on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
