DORCHESTER - Following is an update on today's developments in the county. More details will be in the Banner's June 26 edition. Tomorrow's edition has already gone to press.

• Secretary Mayor Mel Dennis announced her resignation today. Her full statement was, "Another chapter of my life closed today as I turned in my resignation as Mayor. Life is too short to not appreciate every moment and experience. As our family deals with each struggle and triumph dealt to us this year, we have continued to spread awareness and togetherness in our community. I am so proud to be part of my family and part of four individuals that each have made an impact in their community. We have never denied who we are and how we live life to its fullest. I know Pop Dennis is proud of all of us and when we close our door for the final time July 12th we leave a legacy of what it means to be genuine and truthful about the good, the bad, and the ugly because you need it all to truly live and love life to the fullest. Here’s to what is next in our crazy adventure."

• At tonight's meeting of the Dorchester County Council, members voted unanimously to allow the lease of Kay's At the Airport Restaurant to go to the owner's daughter, Katie. Owner Kay Rhea announced recently that the county would not renew her lease.

The arrangement determined tonight allows the popular eatery to continue serving locals and visitors, many of whom come to Dorchester to visit the restaurant.

• Delmarva Community Services' CEO Santo Grande asked the council for support to make up for state cuts in funding DCS' meals program for the elderly. Mr. Grande said the cuts were, "fundamentally discriminatory," taking money from poor, rural counties in the state and sending it to Western Shore areas.

"They reallocated our money, then," Council Member Ricky Travers (District 3) said. The council agreed to work on a way to assist DCS, which has seen a 60 percent reduction in state funding for the meals.
