The Jim Bugg estate, formerly known as Poverty Point, is being changed to a retreat for veterans, and will be re-named “Patriot Point.”[/caption] WASHINGTON, D.C. —  The DC Bowl Committee (DCBC) today announced that it is purchasing a 290-acre property near Cambridge, to operate as a retreat for wounded service members and their families. It will be named Patriot Point. The property previously was known as Poverty Point, located just north of Taylor’s Island on the banks of Slaughter Creek. The northern limit of the property is delineated by Parsons Creek and Taylors Island Road. Prior to the purchase by DCBC, Poverty Point was owned by Jim Bugg, who was founder and chairman of the Yellow Ribbon Fund and a big supporter of wounded service members/veterans. Mr. Bugg would informally host wounded service members at the property. Prior to Mr. Bugg, the property was owned by the silent movie star Clara Bow. DCBC are renaming the property “Patriot Point.” “Patriot Point will be a place for the men and women who serve our nation so selflessly to take the time to recharge,” DCBowl Committee President & Executive Director Steve Beck said. “We look forward to welcoming these brave men and women to the Eastern Shore and allowing them to enjoy themselves and relax.” Patriot Point’s Founding Partners are Stuart Plank and the Taishoff Family Foundation. The State of Maryland included $500,000 in state capital funding for Patriot Point, which will help with improvements on the property, including handicap accessibility. “This bill was initiated by the Maryland Legislature and in particular the Legislature’s Veterans’ Caucus, Sen. Doug Peters, Senate Chair and Del. C.T. Wilson, House Chair,” said a spokesperson for DCBC. “We also are thankful for the support from House Speaker Mike Busch and Senate President Mike Miller.” “We are grateful to our founding partners in this endeavor, Stuart Plank and the Taishoff Family Foundation,” Mr. Beck said. “We learned about this property from Stuart, who had visited when its former owner, James Bugg, the chairman of the Yellow Ribbon Fund, used it to host wounded service members. Patriot Point will further develop and formalize Mr. Bugg’s concept.” At Patriot Point, guests will be able to hunt and fish. They also will be able to go crabbing and enjoy watersports. Patriot Point has 2.3 miles of waterfront along Parsons Creek, Slaughters Creek and the Little Choptank River, leading to the nearby Chesapeake Bay. Additionally, by maintaining the existing property, Patriot Point will continue to protect wetlands and shoreline. There is an existing 6 bedroom/5 bathroom guest house, as well as a 4 bedroom/3 bathroom main house on the property. There also is a caretaker’s house, a barn and a few outbuilding. The property is 290 acres. “Patriot Point is a place for the men and women who have served our country to relax and take time away in a stress-free environment with their families and caregivers,” Mr. Plank said.
