CAMBRIDGE - P. Medford Newcomb Sr., 88, passed away at his home on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008.

He was born at Church Creek on April 16, 1919 and was a son of the late George Medford and Vivian Fitzhugh Newcomb.

He attended schools at Church Creek. On Nov. 16, 1940 he was married to the former Della Higgins. Mrs. Newcomb passed away on July 26, 2000.

Some years ago he was engaged in farming. In 1958 he went to work at the Eastern Shore State Hospital where he worked until he retired in 1984.

Mr. Newcomb was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church. Mr. Newcomb enjoyed playing music with a number of local groups playing guitar, fiddle and banjo and also enjoyed singing.

Mr. Newcomb had been in failing health for the past five years when he passed away at his home on Monday morning.

Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Slacum, Sara Smith and Paula Wingo, all of Cambridge and one son, Paul M. Newcomb Jr. of Hurlock. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Terry Busick, Donna Yackley, Clayton Howell, Jason Newcomb and Justin Newcomb; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mildred Quidas of Preston; two brothers, Robert Newcomb of Preston and George Newcomb of Millersville and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Donald Newcomb, Mace Newcomb, John Newcomb and Russell Newcomb, and two sisters, Thelma Newkirk and Jeannette Foxwell.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Antioch United Methodist Church, c/o Mrs. Jay Lane, 5642 Beach Haven Road, East New Market, MD 21631.

Pallbearers will be Jack Smith, Mike Wingo, Clayton Howell, Warren Newcomb, John Newcomb and Bill Foxwell.
