CAMBRIDGE - The winter session at Dorchester Center for the Arts continues with new instructional arts offerings. For complete information, find the winter program catalog online at dorchesterarts.org.
Drawing Basics with Robert Gladney begins on Feb. 3. Students will learn how to observe and draw objects from life, in a realistic style. The instructor will provide exercises for a step-by-step approach to learning observational drawing.
Working in pencil and charcoal, students will learn skills for creating a successful basic drawing. Open to ages 16 and up, students will be taught the following: how to make accurate contour line drawings of objects; how to identify forms and shapes; how to understand the importance of object relationships; how to establish scale and other relationships between objects. A materials list will be available upon registration. The six-week class will take place on Thursdays from 5-7 p.m., through March 10.
Decoy Carving for All with Warren Saunders begins Feb. 4. This 10-week class will meet weekly on Fridays 1-4 p.m. through April 8.
Students will carve a decoy using a knife or more advanced students will power carve in the Ward-style. All decoys are completed with paint.
A $75 supply fee is payable to the instructor at the first class for the wood, eyes and paint for the project. A list of additional supplies and power tools is available.
Up-cycle Bottle Craft with Worldwide Hope is offered for ages 6-17. Students will turn trash into treasure during these up-cycling workshops with WorldWide Hope founder Griselda Jiménez. Students will learn about caring for the environment while creating art out of a recycled bottle.
This class is taught in both English and Spanish. One-day workshops will be Saturdays, Feb. 19 and 26, 2-5 p.m.
