Dockins, Lofland are region champs

CAMBRIDGE – North Dorchester High School will be well represented at the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association 2017 track and field championships. Beginning tomorrow, runners, jumpers and throwers from Shiloh will hit the road, heading to Morgan State University to take their places among other top athletes from around the state.

The Eagles men and women earned their trip at last week’s Region 1A East Championships, held at Cambridge-South Dorchester. C-SD won both the men’s and women’s team titles.

The top four finishers in each of the sport’s 18 events qualify to compete for their region at States, tomorrow and Saturday.

ND women Myasia Jones, Lauren Covey, Kyla Diggs and Jasmine Lofland grabbed second in the 4x100 relay, with a time of

54.58. The same crew will race in the 4x200 at Morgan, by virtue of their third-place finish in 154.01.

Jasmine better eat a big breakfast - she’s going to be busy in Baltimore, having won long jump at Regionals with a mark of 16’ 10”, and getting third in triple jump, with 30’ 9.5”.

Junior Kalifa Warren will be there for discus, after a toss of 92’ 9” for second place at Regionals.

Among the men, Da’Vion Dockins finished fifth in the 100 meters, which normally would have him out of the running for States. But the speedy junior beat the qualifying time of 11.68, with a mark of 11.55, so he’ll be in Baltimore for the 100 also.

He’ll also race in the 200 meters, after finishing third at Regionals with a personal record time of 22.93.

Stephen Layton, only a sophomore, unleashed a 125’ 1” throw to win discus and punch his ticket to Baltimore.

In team results among women, ND placed fourth with 67 points. Men were seventh with 36. For complete individual results, go to md.milesplit.com.

Tomorrow, the Eagles will travel to Morgan State, where action will start at 4 p.m.

Finals will take place on Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
