RIDGELY – The Cambridge-South Dorchester varsity football Vikings traveled to North Caroline High School on Friday, where they were unable to overcome a stout Bulldogs squad. The Vikings were defeated, 35-21, and fell to 1-1 on the season. The Bulldogs advanced to 2-0. High temperatures and humidity affected both teams, as summer refused to release its grip on the Eastern Shore – by game’s end, the Vikings had three starters suffering from cramps. The Vikes got off to a promising start, when Taj Molock ran behind a Jake Morris block for a 25-yard touchdown. This was followed by a very short squib kick, often seen from the Vikings, leaving North Caroline with a short field to work with. A 21-yard run by junior running back David Bailey evened the score at 7-all with 7:27 left in the quarter. The next two drives ended in punts, with North Caroline’s traveling –4 yards and coming to rest a foot in front of their goal line. Three plays later, Tre Lake thumped it in from the 2 for a 14-7 C-SD lead. Both teams seemed sluggish in the second quarter, but things livened up when the Bulldogs blocked a Vikings punt and fell on it in the end zone. A failed extra point attempt left the tally 14-13 with 2:48 left in the half. C-SD struck back around 30 seconds before the break, when quarterback Tyler Harding threw a 24-yard pass to Jake Morris for a score. Harding ended the half 5-for-6 through the air. The third quarter started with a Vikings lead of 21-13, and another very short kickoff. The drive ended with another Bailey TD and a failed 2-point conversion as North Caroline closed the gap to 21-19. Heat and humidity reared its sweaty head at this point, as Tre Lake had to leave the field, and running back C.J. Brummell and Harding were both on the turf getting stretched. With starters struggling and North Caroline picking up the pace, the Bulldogs grabbed the momentum and didn’t let go. North Caroline took its first lead of the game on a 9-yard play and a 2-point conversion with 6:26 to go in the final period. The Bulldogs’ next possession followed a Vikings fumble and an unsportsmanlike penalty on the C-SD bench. With 4:55 left in the game, Bailey ran 9 yards for a TD and the final score of the game. Viking JV football team falls to NC, 36-21 CAMBRIDGE – The Vikings junior varsity football team opened their season with a loss on Thursday, falling to the visiting North Caroline Bulldogs, 36-21. The Bulldogs came to Cambridge having won their season opener the previous week. The contest began as a hard-fought defensive struggle, with the first quarter ending in a scoreless tie. The drought ended when the Vikings scored on an Ethan Bloodsworth 37-yard carry with 8:47 left in the second quarter. A Logan Middleton kick, Shamar Young holding, gave the home team a 7-0 lead. The visitors evened the score with about three minutes left in the second quarter. Then on their first possession of the second half, North Caroline scored on a quarterback sneak, followed by a QB keeper with 4:21 gone in the quarter, for a 21-7 Bulldog advantage. North Caroline followed with a 61-yard run and a 2-point conversion to make it 29-7. But C-SD wasn’t done yet. Quarterback JyQuan Farrare took it in from the 1 and Jacob Smith snagged a throw for a 2-point conversion to make it 29-15. North Caroline added a touchdown with 2:02 left in the game in and the Vikings’ Lamont Jackson notched the final score with 23 seconds to go.
