CAMBRIDGE — The University of Maryland Extension recently welcomed Nathan Bratko as the new Food Supplement Nutrition Education Project Leader / Nutrition Educator at the Dorchester County office.

A native from New Hampshire, Nathan has lived in Maryland for the last three years. He is a Board Certified Nutrition Specialist and Maryland State Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist. Nathan’s passion for food and nutrition began at Johnson & Wales University, where he completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Culinary Arts Nutrition. His love for food led him to work at one of the world’s most renowned restaurants in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A year later, Nathan decided that he could better help individuals through a dynamic health and fitness approach. He left the restaurant industry to become a personal trainer/nutritionist, obtaining a Master of Science Degree in Applied Nutrition from Northeastern University, specializing in Nutrition and Fitness. This has helped him to educate others on the role food and exercise has on the body.

Some of Nathan’s favorite activities include teaching school age children how to shop, cook and select healthy food. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor activities, running and cooking.

As the Project Leader for Maryland’s Food Supplement Nutrition Education (FSNE) service in Dorchester and Talbot counties, Nathan will offer nutrition education programs to help Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households and those eligible for SNAP. FSNE programs are provided at no cost to support the work of community agencies serving SNAP-eligible individuals and families, such as literacy centers, local food banks, schools, soup kitchens, WIC offices, senior centers, community centers, neighborhood groups, and homeless shelters.

In 2014, FSNE reached more than 33,100 low-income participants and made over 256,000 contacts with those participants over series of nutrition education classes throughout the state. FSNE educators in 17 counties and Baltimore City spent almost 9,250 hours delivering nutrition education to individuals throughout the lifespan. To learn more about FSNE, visit http://extension.umd.edu/fsne.

Nathan will be providing FSNE Extension programing in both Dorchester and Talbot counties. To reach Nathan, e-mail nbratko@umd.edu or call at 410-228-8800.
