Nanticoke Creekwatchers needed for 2023 season

Posted

VIENNA - The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance is now recruiting new Nanticoke Creekwatchers to adopt waterways in Delaware and Maryland for the 2023 season.

Currently, sites in or near Mardela Springs and sites near Bridgeville and Seaford, Delaware, are available. These sites are all foot-accessible.

Nanticoke Creekwatchers perform vital water quality monitoring on sites along the Nanticoke River and its creeks. NWA provides all equipment needed, along with extensive training and follow-up support.

All Creekwatchers follow a detailed protocol that meets Tier 3 standards under the Chesapeake Bay Program, the highest possible certification that volunteer programs may obtain. Tier 3 data is used by agencies to make policy and management decisions.

NWA staff also use Nanticoke Creekwatchers data to produce an annual report card and to examine trends in the Nanticoke River watershed.

The season will kick off with training on Saturday, March 18, at Trap Pond State Park’s Baldcypress Nature Center near Laurel, Delaware.

Potential volunteers should register for Nanticoke Creekwatchers training at nanticokeriver.org/cw or contact Beth Wasden, BethWasden@nanticokeriver.org  or 443-944-1175, for more information about the program.
