Murial Elizabeth Airey Shorter

Murial Elizabeth Airey Shorter, 90 CAMBRIDGE - Murial Elizabeth Airey Shorter, of Cambridge, died Thursday, August 14, 2008 in her home. She was 90. Born on May 31, 1918 in Aireys, Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late George Edward Airey and Mattie Faulkner Airey. On November 3, 1939 she married Granville S. Shorter. Mr. Shorter died on December 7, 1979. Mrs. Shorter was known affectionately as "Mom Mom" to not just her family but to hundreds of children's lives she touch by either being their foster mother or day care mother. She was honored by the State of Maryland for her being the oldest day care provider assisting to raise over four hundred children. Mrs. Shorter was a charter member of Souls Harbor Church of God. She was devoted to her church and to all the many children in her life. Mrs. Shorter liked gospel music, singing and playing the tambourine for the children. Mrs. Shorter had a vast collection of cardinals given to her by the several children she cared for, as they all knew cardinals were her favorite bird. Surviving are two daughters, Holly Ann Cook and her husband William of Vienna, Yvonne Church and her husband Terry of Cambridge; a son, Jerry Shorter and his wife Nicole of Cambridge; two sisters, Louise Ray of Cambridge, and Mary Kryczniak of Cape St. Claire; a son-in-law Roy F. Myerly, Jr. of Linkwood; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; two expecting great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Mrs. Shorter is predeceased by two sons, Sammy K. Shorter, Jimmy Shorter; a daughter, Barbara Myerly; two sisters, Charlotte Ewell and Dorothy Edge; two brothers, Buddy Airey and Billy Airey and two granddaughters. Funeral services were Monday, August 18th in Souls Harbor Church of God, Cambridge. It was Officiated by Rev. J. Edward King, Pastor. Burial followed in Dorchester Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Terry Church, William "Bill Cook, Willie Cook, Damien Cook, Jayson Bleyer and Matt Trader. Memorial offerings may be made in Mrs. Shorter's memory to Souls Harbor Church of God, 718 Peachblossom Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733.
