MD-spectrum 2x-042716 Special to Dorchester Banner/DCA
Community members are invited to become Art Camp Angels and sponsor a child for a week of art camp this summer at DCA. Call 410-228-7782 for more information.
The Mid-Shore Community Band will present a free concert at the Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) on Sunday, at 4 p.m. This will be the first time the Band has performed in the George B. Todd Performance Hall on DCA’s 2nd floor. The concert is free and open to the public and a cash bar will be available. Donations will also be accepted for the band. While there is no cost, reservations are requested to assist with event set up. To make reservations, call 410-228-7782 or e-mail receptionist@dorchesterarts.org. Workshops And Classes For Adults • Acrylics for the Beginning Painter, instructed by Jacqueline Pfaff-Pratt will be presented on Thursdays beginning May 5 and run for 6 week. This evening session from 6-8 p.m. will share the basics of how to work with acrylic paint, mix colors, set up a palette and paint. The class is open to ages 16-adult. Fees are $85 for DCA members; $125 for non-members. A supply list is available from DCA. • Watercolor Tricks and Techniques with Instructor Jeanne Ewell will take place on May 7 from 10 am to 2:30 p.m. This class is for those with some experience and intermediate level artists. A supply list is available from DCA. Fees are $75 for DCA members; $110 for non-members and participants should bring a lunch and beverage. • “Opening the Door: How Poems Begin” is the title of the poetry workshop to be led by Sue Ellen Thomas. The session will be held on May 11 from 6 - 8 p.m. This workshop is open to poets at all levels, beginner to advance. Fees are $50 for DCA members; $75 for non-members. To register, call 410-228-7782. Art Camp Angels At the recent Guest Artist Event, a fundraiser for DCA, a DCA board member, Alicia Hoffman, demonstrated what it is to be a Summer Art Camp Angel. One of the live auction items was a week of summer camp, which ranged in price from $75 to $125 dollars. Alicia’s final bid of $500 will mean that at least 4 children (if not more) will have the opportunity to attend a week of summer art camp. Others can touch the life of children in our community by making contributions to the Art Camp Angel fund. Support will enable a child or children to attend one of the summer art programs and enrich their lives. The benefits of arts education are many, teaching collaboration, enhancing creativity and raising self-esteem. Contact Barb Seese at 410-228-7782 or email bjseese@dorchesterarts.org to donate. Seeking Volunteers As a nonprofit organization with a small staff, the success of many DCA programs is dependent upon the support of volunteers. Individuals, who have a heart for the arts, but not necessarily the funds to support them, can have major impact by participating as a volunteer. There are many tasks to do; special skills are not needed. DCA uses volunteers as hostesses at receptions; to help with the logistics of running programs and events; to serve as ushers at performances and more. Extra sets of hands would be greatly appreciated. If interested in becoming a volunteer, call 410-228-7782 or e-mailing receptionist@dorchesterarts.org.
