AF--Gambia-Repatriation

Funds from sale of former Gambian ruler's US property to be used to compensate victims

SUMMARY: Gambian authorities have received funds from the sale of a U.S. property owned by former ruler Yahya Jammeh. The Gambia Reparations Commission announced Tuesday that it received over $2.5 million from the sale of a mansion in Maryland. The U.S. Department of State secured the forfeiture in 2022, claiming the property was bought with stolen public funds. The money will be used to pay reparations to victims of Jammeh's rule. Jammeh, who ruled for over two decades, was forced out in 2017. His regime was marked by human rights abuses, including arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances.

US--Trump-Reflecting Pool

Justice Department watchdog declines to investigate handling of Reflecting Pool case, lawyers say

SUMMARY: The Justice Department’s inspector general has declined to investigate the handling of the criminal case against a former Olympian who was cleared of accusations that he intentionally damaged the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. That's according to a letter from the man’s lawyers that was made public Wednesday. The department's internal watchdog told David Hearn’s lawyers that the allegations of professional misconduct fall outside its jurisdiction and are instead within the purview of the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility. The lawyers' letter urges Inspector General Don Berthiaume to reconsider the decision.

US--Canada-Tariffs-Legality

A New Jersey food importer files a lawsuit challenging Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods

SUMMARY: A New Jersey food importer has filed a lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s power to invoke a Depression-era law to levy a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. The Gellert Global Group, a third-generation family business that imports Canadian cheese, took its case Tuesday to the U.S. Court of International Trade. In August, Trump reached back to Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to impose the tariffs on Canada, prompting dollar-for-dollar retaliation from Ottawa and straining already-tense relations between the neighbors and longtime allies. Section 338 tariff authority has never been used in a trade dispute, let alone tested in court.

US--Election 2026-Education-Childcare Costs

It's not just gas and groceries. Childcare costs weigh on some voters before the midterm elections

SUMMARY: Rising childcare costs are a factor for parents weighing how to vote in November's midterm elections. In Pennsylvania's hotly contested 7th Congressional District, both candidates are making childcare part of their pitch to voters. Democratic nominee Bob Brooks supports universal prekindergarten and increased federal childcare assistance. Republican Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, the incumbent, favors bigger tax breaks for families paying for childcare and employers who subsidize it for their workers. Childcare costs have risen faster than inflation from 2020 to 2024. The Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy said it has spent $60 million this year to support Democratic candidates, who have historically favored bigger-ticket childcare investments.

Driver is fatally shot while crossing the George Washington Bridge

SUMMARY: Police say a 46-year-old man was fatally shot as he drove over the George Washington Bridge. The shooting happened toward the end of the Tuesday evening rush on the upper deck of the bridge that connects New York City and New Jersey. Authorities say that while responding to calls about the shooting on the New Jersey-bound side, they found the man unconscious with a gunshot wound in the vehicle's driver’s seat. He was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Police identified the man as Koran Irvine of Valley Cottage, New York. They haven't made any arrests or given a possible motive for the attack. Con Edison says the victim worked for the utility and called his death “senseless.”

Top draft pick AJ Dybantsa to miss the season opener for Wizards with a sprained ankle

SUMMARY: Top draft pick AJ Dybantsa will miss the season opener for the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night with a sprained ankle. Coach Brian Keefe said Tuesday that Dybantsa would not play against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Wizards took him No. 1 out of BYU in this year’s draft. Dybantsa is one of the reasons hopes are higher in Washington than in the recent past. NFC East makes history with back-to-back winless weeks

SUMMARY: The NFC East has traditionally been the marquee division in the NFL with established big brands with histories of success. The division that features Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington and the New York Giants is the only one in the league where all four teams have won a Super Bowl, with its 14 combined titles being four more than the next best division. But no division has ever had a two-week run as bad as the NFC East. BKN--On Basketball-Opening Takeaways

Opening night in the NBA provided some hints of what may be to come this season

SUMMARY: Opening night in the NBA provided some hints. The Philadelphia 76ers had a stat sheet as well-balanced as just about any in LeBron James’ 24-year career to beat the New York Knicks. The Detroit Pistons were a No. 1 seed last season and felt a need to remind the league that it wasn’t a fluke. And the Oklahoma City Thunder — who lost a home Game 7 to San Antonio in last season’s Western Conference finals — went into Texas and took the fight right to Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs. It is way, way too early to make any conclusions. But there were some things that jumped out Tuesday.

None of the teams in the division have won a game the past two weeks, marking the first time ever that every team in a division played in back-to-back weeks and none won.

French connection: New Orleans and Paris' shared history in spotlight before Saints-Steelers game

SUMMARY: The NFL found a good match between team and international host when the Pittsburgh Steelers played in Dublin last year. Pittsburgh has strong Irish connections, notably with the Rooney family that owns the team. It might have gone one better this time. The New Orleans Saints are in Paris to play a regular-season game in France for the first time in NFL history.

Pope Leo's alma mater Villanova traveling to Rome for hoops doubleheader vs. Notre Dame

SUMMARY: Villanova and Notre Dame's men's and women's teams are set to play a doubleheader in Rome on November 1, marking the start of the college basketball season. The event, called the Eternal City Tip-Off, celebrates the Catholic universities' shared mission. Villanova alumnus Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to hold a private audience with the teams and fans the day before, though his attendance at the games is unlikely due to health reasons. The games will take place at the 11,000-seat Palazzo dello Sport. Organizers expect about 7,000 fans, with significant economic impact anticipated for Italy.

Saints GM Loomis in Paris addresses criticism from team owner amid slow start to season

SUMMARY: New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says he understands the recent criticism from owner Gayle Benson but asked for patience with what he called a “young developing team.” In comments before the Saints beat the New York Giants last Sunday, Benson said Loomis and his staff are responsible for “building a roster capable of sustained success.” The 2-4 Saints haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2020 season. They practiced in Versailles outside Paris ahead of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Loomis says he understands Benson's criticism but notes they are a “young developing team and we have to recognize that.”

Roger Goodell says the NFL welcomes a review of how Eagles handled Jalen Hurts' blood clots

SUMMARY: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league welcomes an investigation into the Philadelphia Eagles' handling of Jalen Hurts' blood clots after the players' union asked for one. Goodell said Wednesday at the end of the NFL's annual fall meeting that the league's chief medical officer has gone through the steps that were followed and added that the union had a right to call for a review. Dr. Allen Sills on Tuesday offered a passionate defense of the Eagles medical staff. The NFL said officials were in touch with team doctors and trainers, as well as the Cleveland Clinic in London. Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season after a blood clot in his left calf traveled to his lungs.
